A Message from the Executive Vice President and Provost
Dean, School of Medicine

gda copyThe Cancer Prevention and Research Institute of Texas has announced the release of a Request for Applications (RFA) for Shared Instrumentation Awards to be funded in fiscal year 2011 (through 8/31/2011).  Each institution is only allowed to submit one application, so I am asking that there be as much collaboration as possible between applicants. The Provost’s Office will screen the applications, and select the application to be submitted.

This new award mechanism will support the acquisition of major research instrumentation that cannot be requested through other CPRIT programs and whose purchase can be justified on a shared-use basis to support the goals of scientifically meritorious cancer research projects. Collaborations are permitted and encouraged. The maximum duration of the award is 5 years.  The maximum amount that may be requested is $3 million for the first year (minimum amount $100,000) and up to $300,000 for each subsequent year. Allowable expenses include the cost of the instrument, installation and/or necessary renovation expenses, and maintenance/service contracts; all of these costs and expenses must be prorated for direct use in cancer research efforts, and there must be an institutional commitment to provide further necessary funds.

A wide variety of research instrumentation can be wholly or partially supported, including but not limited to:

  • biomedical imaging systems
  • microscopes
  • cyclotrons
  • mass spectrometers
  • protein and DNA sequencers
  • flow cytometers
  • cell sorters
