About UTMB's Institutional Review Board (IRB)

UTMB has two IRB committees comprised of approximately 20 members. Each committee meets the regulatory composition requirements as outlined at 45CFR46.107.

The UTMB IRB accepts applications for human subjects' research on a rolling basis. All research applications for human subjects that are not eligible for exempt status or expedited review will be reviewed at a convened IRB meeting.

IRB#1 meets the 1st Friday of the month, and IRB#2 meets the 2nd and 4th Friday of the month.

There is no deadline for submission. Completed applications are assigned to the first available agenda. Application that are eligible for review by the expedited process are assigned to designated reviewers as they are received.

Once a study has been assigned to a meeting for review, the Principal Investigator and Research Coordinator will be notified via email approximately one week before the meeting date.

All requested information must be supplied, or the protocol will be returned. For example, blank or unanswered questions, missing attachments or missing signatures (especially PI and Department Chair).
