"Newer" Antidepressant Classes

For the purpose of this lesson, we will divide discussion of the antidepressants into two classes -- the "reuptake inhibitors" (which inhibit the reuptake of the monoamines serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine) and the "receptor modulators", which work directly on the receptors.

The "reuptake inhibitors" include the following:

SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor)

SNRI (serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor)

NDRI (norephinephrine dopamine reuptake inhibitor)

Fluoxetine (Prozac)

venlafaxine (Effexor)

bupropion (Wellbutrin)

Sertraline (Zoloft)

desvenlafaxine (Pristiq)

Fluvoxamine (Luvox)

duloxetine (Cymbalta)

Paroxetine (Paxil)

Citalopram (Celexa)

Escitalopram (Lexapro)

The "receptor modulators" include the following

SARI (Serotonin-2 antagonist/reuptake inhibitor) NaSSA (Norepinephrine/Serotonin specific antagonist)
Nefazadone Mirtazapine (Remeron)
Trazadone (Desyrel)
