Substance Dependence
Characterized by both physical and psychological dependence.
DSM-IV Criteria for Substance Dependence
Substance Abuse
Is characterized by at least 1 specific symptom indicating that substance use has
interfered with daily functioning.
Cant diagnosis abuse if have ever had dependence diagnosis for that substance.

Most have another diagnosis
Usually alcohol and another drug.

Substance abuse and dependence is adaptive and defensive. There are good parts to the
disorder.
Treatment
Inpatient is best bet.
Prolonged treatment.
Use antabuse, methadone (for withdrawal) and antidepressants

A. Characteristic symptoms two (or more) of the following, each present for a
significant portion of time during a 1-month period (or less if successfully treated):
1) Delusions
2) Hallucinations
3) Disorganized speech
a) Thought content
b) Form of thought
c) Thought process
4) Grossly disorganized or catatonic behavior

B. Social/occupational dysfunction
C. Duration: Continuous signs of the disturbance persist for at least 6 months
