Substance Dependence

Characterized by both physical and psychological dependence.

DSM-IV Criteria for Substance Dependence

 

Substance Abuse

Is characterized by at least 1 specific symptom indicating that substance use has interfered with daily functioning.

Can’t diagnosis abuse if have ever had dependence diagnosis for that substance.

Most have another diagnosis

Usually alcohol and another drug.

Etiology

Substance abuse and dependence is adaptive and defensive. There are good parts to the disorder.

 

Treatment

Inpatient is best bet.

Prolonged treatment.

Use antabuse, methadone (for withdrawal) and antidepressants
