| COGNITIVE: |
- Become familiar with the course requirements and expectations.
- Recognize DSM IV classification system.
- Review the steps in a psychiatric interview as well as to recognize and classify
abnormal responses.
- Summarize the common signs and symptoms of psychiatric illnesses which
typically involve mood, affect,
behavior, thinking, emotion, speech, and memory.
- Be familiar with the Quality of Life InPatient Assessment.
- Be familiar with the Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE).

| AFFECTIVE: |
- Support the careful analysis of psychiatric patients by use of mental status examination
and psychiatric history.
- Recognize that PA students will not be expected to perform as
psychologists, but that this course will introduce them to psychological
dynamics of personality and assessment used in the care and treatment of
their patients.
- Accept the use of DSM IV method to scientifically classify psychiatric diseases.

- Check out and review the Movie Instinct with Cuba Gooding, Jr.
and evaluate the
interview style used in this forensic situation
- Perform a mental status examination on a classmate.
- Develop and write-out a mental status examination checklist.
- Role-play a psychiatric examination on a simulated patient in the patient evaluation
laboratory.
