Class Project 1

All students enrolled in this course are required to administer the Folstein Mini Mental Status Exam (MMSE) and the In Patient Quality of Life as part of the course requirements.  The instruments are to be administered to patients in the UTMB Adult Rehabilitation Unit located in the John Sealy Towers 8C (8th Floor, South End).  The forms can be downloaded from the web page (Course Outline page).  Students are expected to dress professionally.   Students should check in with the psychology resident located in room 8D8 before entering a patient's room (772-8418).  Questionnaire results are to be kept confidential and the original placed with the psychology resident on the adult rehab unit.  This is an opportunity for you to participate in the gathering of important psychological assessment information.  Both instruments can be administered to the same patient.  However, if you are the 2nd or 3rd interviewer they may be getting tired of the assessment and choose NOT to participate.  Please try to avoid giving the instruments to patients who have recently participated in the assessment.  There is usually a census of 12-16 patients on this unit at UTMB.

In order not to overwhelm the patients please use the following student interview schedule:

September - A-K    October - L-R    November - S-Z

Your name will be checked off when the original forms (correctly scored) are turned in on the Adult Rehab Unit to one of the psychology residents (772-8418 Raquel Wasielewski) and you complete the documentation below.   A copy of the MMSE and the Quality of Life is located on the Course Outline Web Page.  To obtain full credit you must complete the assessment and submit the documentation (below) during  the month your last name falls into, as listed above.  You must also post your brief reaction (5-10 sentences) to the experience (how your interaction with the patient went, how they responded to asking simple to more complicated orientation and problem solving questions, etc) on the class WebCT bulletin board.

Class project #1 is 10 percent of your final grade (30 points).

After you complete your evaluation please complete the following documentation (You will need the patient name, patient room number and scores for the MMSE & the Baker Quality of Life.  For full credit you must do both assessments, score the MMSE correctly, and post your reaction on the bulletin board, and complete the documentation below:
