Class Time & Location: Course Coordinator & Primary Instructor: Course Description: This course is designed to assist the occupational therapy student in the understanding of the psychosocial parameters of human behavior, as well as identify the relationship of psychological distress to physical illness. Lectures are intended to enhance the readings. Readings are assigned to enhance prior knowledge. Students are expected to treat this course as a life long approach to learning. Reading, web resources, and class lecture materials are only a few approaches to learning information regarding psychological understanding of patients and their medical conditions. There will also be practical application opportunities through case discussions, assessment of inpatients in the rehabilitation center, and practice interviews with classmates.
Specific Objectives are linked on the Course Outline page for each class. General Objectives: 1. To acquire a basic understanding of personality development and the relationship to patient care. 2. To become familiar with assessment techniques and language in the field of clinical psychology and psychiatry (e.g. clinical interview, the mini-mental status exam, psychological testing). 3. To recognize a wide range of psychological disorders (e.g. thought disorders, adjustment reactions, disorders of mood, and a variety of individual/interpersonal responses to anxiety). 4. To recognize contemporary treatment approaches for psychological disorders (e.g., psychotherapies, psychopharmacology). 5. To become familiar with specific patient dynamics related to behavioral medicine. |
