We have three full time Medical Physicists:

Steven M. Morrill, Ph.D.
(Director)

Brent Parker, Ph.D.

Louis French, M.S.

We offer an IMRT training course which occurs approximately every quarter. The dates for upcoming classes are provided below:

Our primary area of research has been in the area of intensity modulated radiation therapy, IMRT.  IMRT is an advanced form of 3D conformal therapy that uses non-uniform radiation beam intensities (as shown below) on the patient that have been determined using various computer-based optimization algorithms.

This is a sampling of some of our IMRT research for the past 3 years:

  • Dosimetric effect of a hip prosthesis when delivering intensity modulated radiation therapy (IMRT):  a phantom study
    (abstract) (poster)
  • Analysis of Variation in H&D Curve Creation for EDR2 film Dosimetry.
    (abstract) (poster)
  • A TAR-based system for automatic IMRT dose verification.
    (poster)
  • Study Of IMRT Dose Model Inadequacies.
    (abstract) (poster)
  • Radiation Dose Reduction To The Optic Pathway In A Pediatric Patient With Gliosarcoma: A Comparison Of
3-D Conformal Radiation Therapy To Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy
  • MLC Dosimetric Characteristics for Small Field and IMRT Applications.
    (manuscript)
  • Evaluation of Combined Forward and Inverse Planning IMRT for Head and Neck Cancer.
  • Utilizing intensity modulation and inverse treatment planning to overcome dose inhomogeneities in pelvic
radiation of patients with hip prostheses.
  • Craniospinal Irradiation - Use of New Technology to Achieve Dose Uniformity.
    (abstract) (poster)
  • Utilization Of Asymmetric Jaws In The Creation Of Virtual Penumbra Generators For Decreasing Matchline Dose
    Inhomogeneity In Mono-Isocentric Technique.
  • MLC-Quality Assurance Techniques for IMRT Applications. Medical Physics 28 (6), June 2001.
    (manuscript)
  • A Comparison of Inverse IMRT Treatment Plans.
  • Startup Characteristics and Dosimetry of Small Monitor Unit (MU) Segments in Step and Shoot IMRT Delivery for
Two Types of Digital Linear Accelerators.
  • Dose calculation difference for intracavitary brachytherapy using conventional ICRU guidelines and 3D treatment planning systems.
  • A simplified approach to forward planning IMRT.
Are neck nodal volumes from CT slices consistent with those included in the standard 3-field technique?
    (poster)
Improved dose homogeneity with forward planning IMRT (f-IMRT) for intact breast and supraclavicular field irradiation
    (poster)
