Acute Care
The acute care rehabilitation team consists of:
- Licensed Physical and Occupational therapists
- Licensed therapy assistants
- Support staff
The primary focus of the acute care team is to provide assessment and treatment to the adult and child populations
while they are admitted into the hospital. The acute care division is housed in the John Sealy Annex and
has several on site gymnasiums, activity of daily living training areas and a wound care-hydrotherapy center.
Focus of Occupational Therapy:
- Increasing functional independence in Activities of Daily Living
- Range of motion
- Strength
- Coordination
- Mobility
- Cognitive training
- Visual deficits
- Highly specialized to provide a wide variety of splints to maximize function or to protect healing structures.
- Provide valuable insight on patient positioning, assistive techniques/devices to
maximize function for performance of Activities of Daily Living
- Expert advice on discharge recommendations including home safety, patient placement
needs and caregiver education.
Focus of Physical Therapy:
- Increase Strength
- Range of motion
- Balance
- Coordination
- Orthotic assessment
- Mobility centered equipment recommendations
- Functional Mobility skills (Ambulation, Stair training & bed mobility)
- Well versed in balance and gait assessment and makes discharge recommendations based on patient needs
- Trained to provide extensive wound care service with a variety of whirlpool tanks and bed side debridement devices on site
- Expert advice on discharge recommendations including home safety needs and caregiver education
Request for service within the acute care setting is made by the treating physician by consultation through the electronic medical record system.
Consults are usually answered within 48 hours of receipt.
