Lymphedema is an accumulation of high-protein fluid, causing abnormal swelling of the arms, legs, breast, trunk, head and/or neck. It is a common side effect of cancer and cancer treatment , and may cause long-term physical, psychological and social problems for some patients. Although care is provided mainly to breast and prostate surgery patients, other populations that may require lymphedema treatment and education include patients who have had radiation therapy, other surgeries or trauma.
Lymphedema may be primary or secondary. Primary lymphedema develops without obvious cause and may be hereditary or spontaneous. Secondary lymphedema occurs from a disruption of lymph nodes due to surgery, infection or traumatic injury.
The University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Rehabilitation Services employs lymphedema certified therapists. They are among the first certified in Galveston to use the Vodder technique of Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy (MLD/CDT). The MLD/CDT program manages lymphedema and improves the patient’s quality of life by decreasing swelling and pain and reducing the risk of infection. UTMB therapists are certified fitters for several garment types and additional compression devices used in the treatment of lymphedema. This comprehensive MLD/CDT program, which also includes prescribed exercise and skin care, is effective in reducing the fluid build-up in the affected extremity or body part.
The combined experience of UTMB therapists in the treatment of this potentially debilitating condition and the certification in these techniques can ensure that all patients receive the highest quality patient care.
UTMB has a strong focus on a multi-disciplinary approach to care. Licensed physical therapists and occupational therapists can address ancillary needs such as strengthening, wound management, range of motion and functional improvement in addition to the lymphedema.
While there is no known cure for lymphedema, the recent advances in research and improved medical care are enabling many patients to live more productive lives.
UTMB therapists practice the latest techniques and are aware of those recent advances.
The Lymphedema Management program at UTMB is committed to providing thorough, multi-disciplinary, state-of-the-art care. Our lymphedema therapist is a state-licensed occupational therapist who understands the importance of reducing limb size and improving quality of life by helping you regain function. We can help. If you think you can benefit from our program, please call us.
