Mental Health Division

The mental health division of rehabilitation services consists of two adult units and one child and adolescent unit.  The treatment team consists of Occupational Therapists, Therapeutic Recreation Specialists and Music Therapist.

Occupational therapy focuses on:

  • Cognitive functioning
  • Daily living skills
  • Developmental disorders
  • Sensory changes
  • Coping skills
  • Assistance with leisure activities

Therapeutic Recreation focuses on a wide variety of areas including:

  • Wellness
  • General fitness
  • Horticulture
  • Team building activities
  • Cooperative and competitive play

Music Therapy:

Music therapy provides a variety of group activities utilizing instruments and music theory.

The rehabilitation department in this setting is a valuable part of the interdisciplinary treatment team that attends rounds and develops objectives and treatment goals for each individual patient.  Standardized assessments are available with a physician’s order.  Mental health therapist and staff utilize clinics, a gym with a workout area, a game room and a variety of patios to provide services.  Patients are seen at least two times a day, five days a week and one treatment opportunity on the weekends.

Patients are referred to Rehab services by their attending physician with patients highly encouraged to participate in their assigned programming in order to facilitate the continuity of care and assist in the aftercare process.

If interested in learning more about specific programming or the evaluative/treatment process, please contact Karen Kunz at kakunz@utmb.edu or (409) 747-9710.
