What about security? |
| |
Security is important whenever you connect to
the internet, especially for DSL and cable modem connections. You
should consider some kind of firewall to isolate your PC from the internet,
either software- or hardware-based. |

Where can I dial into UTMB from? |
| |
UTMB maintains modem pools in the local 409 areacode and in
the 281/713 areacode. Limited access is also available via a 800
number. Some areas offer "metro" lines that allow you to dial 281/713
numbers as local calls; this gives you local-call access to UTMB. |

What does the modem pool cost? |
No cost, it's free. Long distance charges
apply if the connection is not a local call. |

Don't I need local dialup access to get all UTMB services,
e.g. Online Library journals? |
Some campus access is limited to UTMB's local IP
numbers (including the modem pool). However resources that are meant
to be used by UTMB students, faculty, and staff, no matter where they are
located, will still be available. The Moody Medical Library operates a
proxy server that allows any UTMB user with an email account to access
online resources; there are a few electronic resouces in the library
that can only be used in the library building, but the majority are
available via proxy. |
