Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) or Cable Modem Connections

DSL and cable modems offer 20 - 200 times faster connections than with a modem, offering performance nearly equal to the local campus network.  Prices start at about $40 per month  Your DSL or cable provider also act as your Internet Service Provider (ISP), often giving you extra services like email accounts, personal web pages, etc.  DSL and Cable modems usually require an ethernet card in your PC.

Because DSL and cable internet service is always connected or "on", i.e. you do not need to dial, security of your home PC becomes more important.  You should consider a hardware- or software-based firewall;  prices start at about $70.  These firewalls usually have multiple ethernet connections so you can connect several PCs to the same internet connection.  For more information on hardware firewalls see:
