SecurityWhen you are connected to the internet, the internet is also connected to you. While you are browsing the internet, an internet hacker can be probing and accessing your PC. For dialup connections this is reduced somewhat because the hacker would have to single out the IP number assigned to your from the modem pool at exactly the same time you are on line. However, do not underestimate the risk. A software firewall like Zone Alarm (free from Zone Labs) will help protect you (see below for several other software firewall options). The Shields Up web site has a Shields Tester and port prober to help assess your vulnerability to internet intrusion while online. Because DSL and cable internet service is always connected or "on", i.e. you do not need to dial, security of your home PC becomes more important. You may want to minimize the amount of time your PC is turned on and connected, as you are not vulnerable if your PC is turned off. You should definitely consider a hardware- or software-based firewall. Hardware-based firewall prices start at about $70. These firewalls usually have multiple ethernet connections so you can connect several PCs to the same internet connection.
