Some pregnancies have special needs. The Regional Perinatal Residence, located one block from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB), is a home-away-from-home for high-risk pregnant women.

Here, pregnant women are given both the medical and emotional support they need to help them have a healthier baby. Pregnant women may stay in the Residence as long as medically necessary or until they deliver their baby at UTMB.

There is no cost to stay at the Residence, which is operated by the UTMB Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology (OB/GYN). The facility is a two-story, apartment-like home that has been designed to accommodate 20 high-risk pregnant women. A worker who speaks both English and Spanish is available at the Residence at all times.

Each woman is allowed to register with one person, age 18 or older, to stay with her. The following services are provided free for eligible patients:

    • Private room, which includes a private bathroom and shower, refrigerator, microwave oven, cable TV, and telephone

    • Three meals per day

    • Daily visits by nurses

    • Childbirth and family planning classes taught by nurses

    • Transportation between the Residence and UTMB when needed

Reservations must be arranged by the pregnant woman's health care provider or clinic prior to admission.
