2002 Battle for DICKEN'S STICK
Long time Rivals Galveston RFC and the McAllen Knights will battle
this year on December 7th for Dicken's Stick. The stick is back in Galveston's
hands after a great victory (24-5.) Thanks to McAllen for a tremendous
effort!
2001 Battle for DICKEN'S STICK
The 3rd Annual Battle for Dicken's Stick was cancelled due to an the
Eagles Vs. South Africa match in Houston.
2000 Battle for DICKEN'S STICK
The 2nd Annual Battle for Dicken's Stick was a little cooler than last
years game, but perfect rugby weather. Galveston won this years
match in a hard fought battle with Baton Rouge RFC. Galveston kept
Baton Rouge from scoring a try and possibly tying the game with tough defense
in the final minutes to hold on for a 27-20 victory.
1999 BATTLE for DICKEN'S STICK
The 1999 1st Annual Battle for Dicken's Stick turned out to be a beautiful
day for rugby with temperatures in the low 80's, and sunny skies.
However, the weather that followed was not so kind. Heavy rains cancelled
Dickens Saturday evening events, but the being the resilient rugby players
that we are, we refused to let it interfere with our good time. Congratulations
are in order for Victoria Kronks RFC,
which won the 1st Annual Battle for Dicken's Stick in a hard fought battle
between long time rivals.
HISTORY OF THE BATTLE FOR DICKEN'S STICK
For the past several
years it has been a tradition to have Victoria come to town for a friendly
match and to enjoy the festivities of Dickens Festival on the Strand here
in Galveston. Dickens is celebrated on the first weekend of December every
year. This festival is set to be in the times of Charles
Dickens "A Christmas Carol". There are parades, magic shows, bagpipes,
and lots of people dressed up in outfits depicting this era. Admission
is free to the Strand for those dressed in costume, and $10 for all others.
On December 6th, 1998 we invited not only Victoria,
but Bay Area, Woodlands 2nd side, and their Old Boys side to host
a five team friendly Invitational Tournament, asking only that each team
pay $50 each to assist with food and beer expenses following match play.
All teams played two games each, with a select team taking on Woodlands
for the Championship and play was concluded by 4:00PM. We ate, we
drank, we sang, and then the fun began when we got into costume as the
London Bobbies and the English
Beefeater Guards.
This year we have decided to return
to our traditional match vs. Victoria. However, this once friendly
match will now be a Cup Match, in which we will now be competing for the
treasured "Dicken's Stick". Come out and join the fun, and watch
some great rugby.
