Department of Pharmacy


The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) is a modern health science center with more than 70 major buildings, more than 2,500 students and more than 1,000 faculty. The 84-acre campus includes four schools, three institutes for advanced study, a major medical library, a network of hospitals and clinics that provide a full range of primary and specialized medical care, an affiliated Shriners Burns Hospital, and numerous research facilities. UTMB is a component of the University of Texas System.

Our pharmacists are an integral part of the team in the provision of patient care and play a primary role in our vision of the future. The pharmacy uses up to date and advance technology, including a Robot, Carousel, Pyxis, and CPOE, which allows for advancement of pharmacy technician support, and strategic placement of professional staff to provide the optimal level of clinical services to support patient care. Additionally, the Pharmacy Department supports the educational goals for UTMB and pharmacy practice through their provision of education to healthcare providers, residents, and pharmacy students.

Services currently provided include: comprehensive pharmaceutical care, including quality, cost effective therapy; central and decentral automated drug distribution services; comprehensive IV and chemotherapy services; drug information; investigational drug services; clinical services; an ASHP accredited residency program; and Introductory and Advance Pharmacy Practice Experiential rotations for three Colleges of Pharmacy.


To support the institutional goals of improving the health of patients by ensuring safe and optimal drug therapy; educating healthcare providers, patients, and future leaders in pharmacy; and supporting drug related research.


The vision of the Department of Pharmacy is to be a recognized leader in advancing pharmacy practice through our contributions to high quality, cost effective patient care, education, and research.
