The institution has a defined and published policy for evaluating, awarding, and accepting credit for transfer, experiential learning, advanced placement, and professional certificates that is consistent with its mission and ensures that course work and learning outcomes are at the collegiate level and comparable to the institution’s own degree programs. Transfer of credit for lower division academic courses at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is in compliance with the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Rules (1). UTMB also uses the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (AACRAO) database, “Transfer Credit Practices of Selected Educational Institutions,” to review how other institutions transfer credits. Transfer of credit for both lower-division and upper-division credits and resolution of transfer disputes are addressed in the UTMB General Information Catalog (2), but each school, operating within THECB definitions and criteria, has its own school-specific policies and procedures. The awarding of transfer credit from a regionally accredited institution for coursework offered at UTMB is evaluated by the subject matter experts in the schools, approved by the student’s academic dean or his/her designee based on the internal school policy, and then sent to Enrollment Services for posting to the UTMB transcript.

As stated in the School of Nursing (SON) bulletin, SON can accept prior learning experiences to fulfill prerequisite and/or professional course work credits as evidenced through written examinations, portfolios, demonstrated skills, or diploma or hospital-based training (3). The School of Allied Health Sciences (SAHS) also awards credit for prior learning experience with documentation through examination or measurable experience (4). Graduate courses taken at another institution may be transferred to the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences (GSBS) only on the basis of a recommendation by the student’s graduate program faculty and approval by the dean of the Graduate School (5). Neither GSBS nor the School of Medicine (SOM) award or accept credit for experiential learning, advanced placement, or professional certificates. On rare occasions, the School of Medicine permits students to transfer into the SOM. Procedures for applying for a transfer, including a passing score on the United States Medical Licensing Examination (USMLE), Step 1, are outlined in the SOM Bulletin (6).
