Narrative:
The Moody Medical Library at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) is staffed by nine full-time professional librarians with a master’s degree in library and information science from a school accredited by the American Library Association (ALA). Minimum qualifications for professional librarians are consistent with standards and guidelines by such professional associations as ALA, the Medical Library Association (MLA) and the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL). Annual UTMB performance evaluations are administered to ensure the librarians retain competency in the performance of their duties. Vitae and copies of college transcripts for professional library staff are on file in the library administrative offices (1) (2). Librarians have faculty appointments in the School of Medicine.

In addition to the librarians, the UTMB library is staffed by 39 classified support staff and four part time hourly assistants. During the 2005-2006 academic year, the library had a total of 52 employees. Staff performance is reviewed annually. The Academic Computing unit, which provides a broad range of computer-related services to faculty, staff, and students in support of educational and research activities, is staffed by 6.8 FTEs. The Learning Resource Center (LRC) located in the Allied Health Sciences and Nursing building is staffed by three classified support staff. Key personnel are well qualified, with appropriate education or experience in library and/or other learning resources (3).

Data used to compare staffing levels suggest that the UTMB library is in compliance with this requirement. During the 2005-2006 academic year, the Library had a total of 52 employees. Comparative data from the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) reported member institutions mean number of employees at 33.99. The UTMB library exceeded the average, ensuring sufficient number of qualified staff.

The UTMB library provides librarians and classified support staff with development opportunities. In fiscal year 2005-2006, the UTMB library expended $23,171 for professional development. The purpose of staff development is to increase the ability of the library staff to serve its public by supporting a variety of learning opportunities for all staff members. Librarians regularly attend national, state, regional and local professional conferences and certified continuing education courses. Support staff attends relevant continuing education opportunities available locally and on campus.

Academic Computing
UTMB employs an organizational alignment in which the administrative, educational, research and patient care functions operate under a common information technology infrastructure. Information Services provides institutional information technology infrastructure support, including access management and security, data network, desktop support, help desk support, mainframes and distributed systems, video technical services, and voice communications. Information Services also provides support for most institutional applications.
