Narrative

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) develops recruitment materials and presentations through a close collaboration among schools, programs, school offices of admissions, University Student Services, and the Office of University Advancement. Recruitment materials, including printed and Web-based information, are kept as current as possible and accurately represent each school’s program offerings, admission practices, and policies. Review of these materials is part of the brand identity management function developed as a method of maintaining graphic and editorial consistency throughout an extensive and diverse institution (1). General and current information about the recruitment activities of schools and programs of each school are found on the public Web pages of the schools (2) (3) (4) (5).

The four schools recruit from different applicant pools. For example, the School of Medicine and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences accept students who have completed a baccalaureate degree while the School of Health Professions and School of Nursing also have programs for community college graduates. Recruitment materials and presentations are carefully tailored by each school for each target applicant pool.

The schools of nursing and health professions offer distance education programs. The School of Nursing has brochures for each of their distance education programs that provide specific information and directs the interested students to the School’s website for additional information (6). The SON website also includes a list of Frequently Asked Questions directed specifically to individuals interested in their on-line PhD program (7). The School of Health Professions provides links to specific information for their distance educations programs on their website (8).

UTMB has a commitment to equal opportunity for all students and prominently displays this in the General Catalog (9). The University is compliant with applicable federal and state laws and regulations and does not discriminate of the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, age, religion, disability, or status as a Vietnam-era veteran in any of its policies, practices, and procedures. In addition, components of The University of Texas System (UT) do not discriminate on the basis of sexual orientation. These policies are emphasized in all recruitment materials (10).

Each school has an individual—assistant or associate dean or director—in charge of student affairs and their office, in conjunction with their respective academic departments and divisions, is responsible for the development and maintenance of all recruitment materials for that school. Recruitment materials are reviewed annually by the Student Affairs Council (11). That Council is composed of the four student affairs individuals and the Associate Vice President for University Student Services. The Council ensures that all relevant information related to Americans with Disabilities Act, admissions, tuition and fees, and other topics associated with recruitment are included as required.
