The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) uses various methods to verify the identity of students who register in a distance education course or program, including:

  • Using a secure login and pass code to participate in class or coursework, and
  • Showing their official UTMB badge or identification to gain entry into a proctored examination site.

Secure Login and Pass Code
Information Services policies apply to all faculty, staff, and students who are assigned any form of user authentication account. Passwords must be changed every 180 days for normative use and every 30 days for administrative and special access privileges, and must be constructed according to a set of rules spelled out in Information Security standards (1).

Proctored Examinations
Online testing is available in proctored testing centers around the state and via the University network and Internet. Testing software varies by school and applications. Distance education is offered through the School of Nursing (SON) and the School of Health Professions (SHP). In both schools, students are required to show their official UTMB badge or identification to gain entry into either a Galveston-based or distant proctored exam (2) (3).
