Graduation

Graduation from the UTMB SBB program is a special occasion.  Graduation is held in conjunction with the L. Jean Stubbins Memorial LectureshipSo we have a special guest each year that gets to participate in the fun as well as graduate the students from the year long program.  There is a big dinner party with fun activities for the staff, lecturers and special invited guests.

Who was L. Jean Stubbins?

L. Jean Stubbins was born September 22, 1917 in Michigan.  She attended the University of Illinois and received her blood bank training at the Michael Reese Hospital School of medical Technology.  When the John Sealy Hospital Blood Bank was first established in 1943, Miss Stubbins was invited to become its first technical director.

Blood banking at that time was still in its infancy.  The Rh factor was discovered only a few years earlier and systems other than ABO and Rh were largely unknown.  Because of her entrance into the field at that particular time and because of her determination, leadership and talent, Ms. Stubbins could be considered a true pioneer of the profession.

During her tenure at UTMB, she was organizer or charter member of virtually every blood banking organization in Texas and the nation.  For instance, as a result of the Texas City Disaster in 1947, the American Association of Blood Banks was formed.  She served on several committees of that organization as well as on the editorial board.  She was instrumental in formulating requirements for the Specialist in Blood Banking training.  The UTMB Blood Banking Program was one of the first such schools accredited in 1954.  From 1948 to 1969, Stubbins was coordinator of the UTMB School of Medical Technology.  She also was active in the local chapter of Texas Society for Medical Technologists.

She contributed in other areas as well, such as being one of the founders of the UTMB credit union, instituting the Central Supply Department and designing the "new" Blood Bank facility, which was considered advanced in 1960.

Miss Stubbins retired in 1971 after 28 years at UTMB.  The last several years of her life she lived at the Moody House.  Even there, she put her administrative talents to use as President of the Resident Association.  She passed away in March of 1983 at the age of 66.
