




The Sealy Center on Aging
The Sealy Center on Aging facilitates communication and collaborative scholarship among researchers at
UTMB related to aging. A specific goal is
to build bridges between basic scientists and clinicians who share common interests in aging. The center
sponsors a variety of activities directed toward fostering, strengthening and expanding efforts in aging
research, education and community service at UTMB.
Leadership
The Sealy Center on Aging is directed

James S. Goodwin, MD,

Cynthia Mitchell Distinguished Chair in Geriatric Medicine. The Center
Associate director is

Moody Distinguished Chair.
Nationally recognized leader in aging research
The Sealy Center on Aging underwent a comprehensive external review in 2001 and was identified as one of the top aging research programs in the country.
- Increased external funding for aging research of 4 million in 1997 to over 20 million in 2005
- Expert research in muscle function among older adults as part of our Pepper Center (Older Americans Independence Center)
Support research development and training
- Pepper Center - junior investigators or established researchers whose work is relevant to preserving independence of older Americans
- Pre- and Post-doctoral training for research on older minorities
Collaboration
- Established Advisory Council made up of more than 60 representatives from UTMB & community
- Expanded its collaboration with other Pepper Centers to enhance muscle research in clinical trials of interventions to improve function.
