Dr. Rebeca Wong, Ph.D., Center Director since January 2008.
Dr. Wong is a Mexican scholar who received a PhD in Economics from the University of Michigan in 1987. She is professor of Sociomedical Sciences at PMCH, Senior Fellow of the Sealy Center on Aging, and Director of the UTMB WHO/PAHO Collaborating Center on Aging and Health.
Dr. Wong has built international recognition as a researcher with focus on the economic determinants and consequences of population aging; economic constraints and household and individual’s behaviors related to health and aging; and has pioneered the use of binational perspectives to study health among Mexican immigrants in the U.S.
Dr. Wong’s research interests include: poverty and utilization of health services among elderly, cross-national comparisons of unhealthy behaviors in old age, international migration and later old age wellbeing, the impact of social security reform on poverty in Mexico, health differentials in old age, wealth accumulation and its determinants among the elderly, and catastrophic health care expenditures in households of Latin America.
