Dr. Stanley M. Lemon is a Professor in the Departments of Microbiology & Immunology and Internal Medicine at UTMB. He received his undergraduate degree from Princeton University and his M.D. from the University of Rochester, followed by postgraduate training in internal medicine and infectious diseases at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served on the faculty of the University of North Carolina from 1983 to 1997, moving to UTMB in 1997 as Chair of the Department of Microbiology & Immunology. He was appointed Dean of Medicine ad interim in 1999, and permanent Dean in 2000. Dr. Lemon’s research relates to the Molecular mechanisms of replication of positive-strand RNA viruses and the pathogenesis of human hepatitis viruses, particularly hepatitis C and hepatitis A viruses; host innate immune responses to RNA viruses, and mechanisms of viral escape; hepatitis C virus oncogenesis. He has published over 180 papers, and numerous textbooks chapters related to hepatitis and other viral infections, and has had a longstanding interest in vaccine development. He presently serves as Chairman of the U.S. Hepatitis Panel of the US-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program and as Vice Chair of the Institute of Medicine’s Forum on Emerging Infections. |
