The majority of research in our laboratory is related to the pathogenesis of intestinal diseases. Emphasis is placed on bacterial infections of the small intestine, including salmonellosis and cholera. Recent investigations have been extended to the study of idiopathic inflammatory bowel diseases. The research incorporates molecular and immunological approaches to answer questions about bacteria-host interactions. The ultimate goal is to derive mechanistic information that will enable the development of therapeutic and prophylactic approaches for interrupting the pathogenic mechanisms of secretory and inflammatory diarrheal diseases.
