Introducing MR. YUK

MR.YUK is a tool to use in teaching children about dangerous products around the home. MR. YUK alone can’t prevent childhood poisonings. Children must learn to “always ask first” before touching anything. The Southeast Texas Poison Center (SETPC) experts encourage that you take your children around the home and let the children hold the MR. YUK stickers while an adult places them on the toxic products and stress that MR.YUK can show children that these toxic products can hurt people. Don’t put MR.YUK on “safe” items because children need to identify MR.YUK as an immediate warning of danger. Stress to children to not touch any item if they see a MR.YUK sticker on the product and that they should “always ask first”. Poisons can also be “tricky” because they can look similar to other products that are good for us, i.e. candy vs. medicine. Never say, “Medicine is candy.” Medicine is only handled by an adult. Use MR.YUK, teach the poison prevention concepts, and follow directions provided as a safety checklist in the Poison Prevention Brochure’s to make your home safer.
