First SIGHT Meeting
Where: CSA, 3rd Floor
When: Noon, September 18, 2009
Our
dues are $40 (for all 4 years), which includes a SIGHT T-shirt. We have a couple
of big fundraising events this year to raise money for charitable organizations
and also a number of community service projects in Galveston County. Our
meetings are on a variety of different topics: sometimes we will talk about how
to set up international electives, and some will involve bringing-in speakers to
give a talk on a particular aspect of global health. If you are interested in
becoming a part of SIGHT, please contact an officer with your T-shirt size,
whether or not you'd like to be on the events and/or community service
committee, and if there are any specific topics you would like to hear more
about. Our next meeting will be in the first half of October, and we will be
discussing our upcoming involvement in the Halloween Carnival and setting up
Dock Rock (see below for more details). I'm including notes from the first
meeting below for those of you that are interested in reading what was
discussed! Hope to see you all in October!
This first meeting was just a general introduction to the club and what our
plans are for the upcoming year! Here's a quick recap:
- SIGHT stands for Students Improving Global Health Together, and is an
organization dedicated to helping underserved populations both around the
world and here at home in Galveston. Historically, SIGHT is one of the
biggest and most active organizations on campus, and this year will be no
different! We have monthly meetings where lunch will be provided, and plan
to have speakers on a variety of topics as well as fundraising events and
community service opportunities for students to get involved in.
- International Electives: one of the things SIGHT is most known for is
providing students who are interested in doing an elective abroad with the
opportunity to meet and talk with both students who have travelled
previously and faculty who are conducting research abroad. We have meetings
dedicated specifically to helping you decide where you want to go, what you
want to do, and how to physically go about setting it up, and we also have a
mixer to allow you to be exposed to students and faculty interested in
similar things.
- Events: we host two major events during the year: the first is called
"Dock Rock" and will take place this fall -- it's a night out on the Strand
(alcohol will be served), and all proceeds are donated to a charity of our
choice. We will also be hosting a 5K run during the spring to raise funds
for another charitable organization. We need people to join the events
committee in order to decide which charities we will be supporting and to
set up and advertise these events.
- Community Service: We will be taking part in a number of community
service projects this year, the first of which will be selecting a game and
setting up a booth at the Halloween Carnival on Friday, October 30th. We
also plan on organizing visits with the Children's Center on the island that
houses kids whose parents were deported or caught at the border. We will
also be helping with International Health Week in November, which will
include a photo contest, international speakers, and research presentations.
We will need volunteers to help organize and work at this event.
