USMLE Board Preparation:
Passage
of USMLE Step 1 and 2 are required to graduate from UTMB. The Office
of Academic Support Services and Career Counseling provides support for
medical student board preparation with several programs:
- Board Preparation Manual: A manual
for Step 1 board preparation is provided to each student. A board preparation
orientation meeting is held with all second year students where the
manual is distributed. The orientation kicks-off the board preparation
season and introduces the board preparation activities provided by the
UTMB School of Medicine.
- Step Prep: A two week board review workshop is offered to facilitate MS-II student in preparation for Step 1 of the United States Medical Licensure Examination. This workshop is offered at the end of April and the beginning of May. This board review consists of 10 exams designed to familiarize students with the required pace and vignette format of Step 1. A series of faculty presentations that cover high-yield material for Microbiology, Pharmacology, Behavioral Science, and Neurology follow the exams during the two week period.
- Peer Mentoring: A Peer Mentoring Program is offered to assist students with organization, setting up a study calendar, selecting study materials and identifying high yield content areas. This program uses a small group format, begins during Derm/Heme block and can continue through the end of June, depending on group needs.
- Individual Tutoring: Individualized assistance in preparing for USMLE, Steps 1 and 2 is provided upon request, but is dependent on availability of peer tutors.
