Career Counseling

Residency Application Workshops: Two workshops are held to introduce students to the residency application process. During the half-day workshops, students are familiarized with the application process, match day, the MSPE letter, use of the ERAS system, the interview process, and the personal statement. Faculty and student panels present their experiences of the Residency Match and answer questions. A Residency Fair follows the second workshop where residency program directors are available to discuss details of their programs with potential applicants.

Individual Career Counseling: The Academic Support Services and Career Counseling Office offers individualized assessments such as the Myers Briggs, the Holland Hexagon of Career Preferences, the Values Identification, and Critical Components Analysis in conjunction with the AAMC’s Careers in Medicine (CIM) Program. Assistance with personal statements, curriculum vitas, and interview techniques are also available.

Small Group Workshops: Workshops are offered to help applicants identify the best residency match for them. Assessments are given to assist in matching personality characteristics, interests, and values to professionals in different medical specialties. The assessment battery is formulated in conjunction with AAMC’s CIM program. In addition, the workshop guides students through navigating the Careers in Medicine (CIM) Website. The workshop also identifies other literature, websites, and faculty resources in their search for a career match.
