Academic Counseling: The Office of Support Services and Career Counseling provides individualized and group academic advising to students on matters such as:
Assessment: The Office of Academic Support Services and Career Counseling provides screening for learning disabilities, attention disorders, and learning styles. It also makes referrals for additional testing and evaluation when appropriate. The office guides students through the processes involved in requesting accommodations for an identified physical or learning disability.
Tutoring Program: Tutoring services are available on an individual basis to all UTMB medical students, at no cost. Small group tutoring is available for those students experiencing academic difficulty. Tutoring sessions are led by upper-level medical students who are familiar with course content. Tutoring is proactive and encourages participation from the outset of a course block rather than subsequent to academic difficulty.
Peer Liaisons: Upper level students who have successfully mastered the basic science and the clinical clerkships periodically meet with upcoming students to familiarize them with clinical rotations, the residency application process, and research opportunities. These sessions are coordinated and scheduled by the Office of Academic Support Services and Career Counseling by request from individual students or by the student body.Theresa Silva, BS
