Preparing For Hurricanes

The month of June signals the start of the hurricane season each year, bringing with it the need for UTMB departments to review and update their hurricane preparedness plans.

Please note the following key points in hurricane planning and awareness:

As the official charged with emergency preparedness planning and response, it is the Institutional Emergency Preparedness Officer who authorizes evacuation of the campus should the need arise.

Communication about a campus evacuation also must be authorized by the IEPO. Evacuation is carried out sequentially, typically with students going first, followed by all patients who can safely be evacuated, and then all employees not designated as essential. For safety reasons, UTMB wants everyone off the island who can be.

UTMB is not a shelter, and there are no shelters on Galveston Island.

Hurricanes are unpredictable. We never know when one will develop in the Gulf, and when they do, we have a very small window of time to put our plan into action. That is why it is absolutely imperative that everyone at UTMB plan in advance. It is the only way to care for our patients, our employees and the institution.
