Configuring Outlook Express

You can use Outlook Express to access your UTMB email.  However keep in mind that you must use your Internet Service Provider (ISP) to send email as the UTMB SMTP server will not accept email from anonymous off-campus users (for security and spam reasons).  Your ISP most certainly provides SMTP service to you so this should not be a problem.

1.  Open Outlook Express and select Accounts from the Tools menu.

This will open the Accounts window:

2.  Click the Add button and select Mail from the menu.  The Mail Account wizard will first ask for your name:

Enter your name and click Next.

3.  Now enter your email address:

Enter your email address in the box and click Next.

4.  Now enter the server information:

The incoming POP server is  pop.utmb.edu  .  For the outgoing mail (SMTP) server use the name (or IP number) provided by your ISP.  For example the Time Warner RoadRunner SMTP server is  smtp-server.houston.rr.com .  Click Next.

5.  Finally enter your logon information.  This is your UTMB email username and password.

Click the Remember password option if you would like Outlook Express to login without entering your password each time.  Click Next.

6.  Test your connection by selecting Send and Receive from the Tools menu and then selecting pop.utmb.edu.  You should see a window like:

Once authorized Outlook Express will begin downloading your UTMB email.

7.  To incorporate the UTMB email directory into Outlook Express see Configuring an Address Book for Outlook Express.
