Federal Work Study (FWS) Positions

Effective with the 2007-2008 academic year, first year School of Medicine students are not eligible to obtain a FWS job. Second, third, and fourth year School of Medicine students wishing to obtain a position must first get approval from Lauree Thomas, MD, Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions in the School of Medicine.
Student Activities Assistants
Assist in planning, coordination, and possible facilitation of student activities. Projects may include QUEST, community service, intramurals and health related activities, diversity activities, and other special programs as determined by the Director. Computer knowledge, typing, and organizational skills needed. Basic job outlines for these positions are listed below:
Leadership Activities
The leadership activities empower students to make a difference. This position will work with the Student Life and Planning (SLaP) Group, Quest, the Diplomats, and other leadership projects to enhance the students’ potential.
Diversity Activities
This position will work with the Student Diversity Advisory Committee and related student organizations to provide quality educational experiences for the student body.
Community Service
Volunteer activities meet the needs of others and better the community as a whole. This position will coordinate Student Life sponsored volunteer projects and help support student organizational service activities.
Health and Fitness Activities
Individual fitness is a vital part of being a well-rounded, healthy person. This work study position will support Intramurals, All Sports Day, and other health and/or fitness activities for the student body.

Intramural positions needed for Student Government run games played at UTMB Field House. The primary responsiblity will be for the refereeing of games, but will also include coordinating and scheduling the games, supplying rules and regulations, and completing necessary reports.

These students will design and assist in production the Syndrome (yearbook). They will communicate with various individuals around campus to coordinate receipt of composite and candid photos. Individual must be detail oriented and knowledge of computer graphic software is desirable.

This position will be responsible for managing the Student Life web pages. This will involve editing or programming based on current needs and goals; providing technical support to the Student Life staff during regular office hours, and occasionally being
available during off hours as needed. The students must be available by pager or e-mail to respond to problems in a timely manner. Must have knowledge or experience with servers, web development, html and/or CSS. Skills in Dreamweaver a plus.

These students will be responsible for managing the student center computer room outside of regular office hours (evenings and weekends). Assist students with basic computer based assignments. Must be conversant and comfortable with MSOffice software (particularly MSWord and MS PowerPoint), the internet, and printer troubleshooting.
Clinical Directors of St. Vincent's House Free Clinic

These 4th year med or senior PA students will be the clinical directors of the Saint Vincent’s House Free Clinic. The duties will include attending clinic board meetings, supervising the day-to-day operation of the clinic, developing the clinic budget, preparing grant proposals, procuring necessary clinic supplies, maintenance of medical records, recruiting faculty and student volunteers, guiding 1st and 2nd year medical or PA students in clinical activities, and directly meeting with patients. The clinical directors will also oversee planning of the long term goals of the clinic.

These students will be the assistant directors of the St. Vincent’s House Free Clinic. They will be responsible for supervising the budget, finances, supplies, and medical records for the clinic. Specifically they will be involved in fund raising (including the writing of grant proposal), budget development, gathering and maintenance of necessary supplies, and maintenance of medical records. They will assist in other duties involved with the operation of the clinic as needed, including direct patient contact.
