MESSAGE FROM THE PROVOST
It is my pleasure to announce the appointment of Dr. Vincent J. Loffredo as the Associate Vice President for University Student Services, effective August 1, 2008. In this role he will report to the Vice President for Education, Dr. Pamela Watson, and be responsible for overseeing the operations of the institutional Student Services programs and activities including the Offices of the Registrar, Financial Aid, Student Life, Counseling and Student Health Services. He will also be responsible for strategic planning, financial management, and process improvement strategies in these areas.
Dr. Loffredo currently serves as Assistant Professor and Associate Dean for Student Affairs and Admissions in the UTMB School of Nursing. In this role, he manages the Admissions and Student Affairs Departments and is responsible for the development, implementation and evaluation of student services and non-academic student policies for the School of Nursing. He also serves as the liaison officer for the School of Nursing with UTMB’s institutional offices of student affairs and student services.
Dr. Loffredo's career began in the field of exercise science. He was a fitness consultant for the Dallas Cowboys-NFL, and a Personal Trainer for various fitness facilities in Dallas. He later became the Director of Exercise Physiology for DRCA Medical Corporation in Houston and spent several years as a training specialist for the City of Houston's Police Academy. During this time, he was also awarded a Doctoral Teaching Fellowship at the University of Houston, and worked as an adjunct faculty member for North Harris Community College in Physical Education. Dr. Loffredo became a founding faculty member and the Director of Wellness for Montgomery College in The Woodlands Texas. While there, he served on the Board of Directors for the Conroe YMCA. Dr. Loffredo joined the faculty at Texas A&M University–Galveston Kinesiology Department as a Senior Academic Advisor for three years. Prior to coming to UTMB, he served as the first Vice President of Academic Affairs at American Intercontinental University in Houston. He joined UTMB in 2004 as an Academic Counselor in the School of Nursing.
Dr. Loffredo earned a Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Syracuse University in New York, a Master’s degree in Physical Education and a Doctor of Education degree from the University of Houston with research in the area of Curriculum and Instruction in Physical Education.

Thomas N. and Gleaves T. James Distinguished ChairThe Hector P. Garcia Committee solicits applications from UTMB students for the Hector P. Garcia, M.D. Cultural Competence Award. The award, which includes a monetary prize, will be presented in September 2008, at the annual Hector P. Garcia, M.D. Award Ceremony.
Essay competition is open to students from all four UTMB schools. Winning essay will be awarded a monetary prize.

The game consoles can be checked out for use in the TV rooms on the third floor of the Lee Hage Jamail Student Center by any currently enrolled UTMB students. Students can come to the Office of Student Life (Room 2.110) during regular business hours to check out the consoles, controllers and games. Students must have their UTMB I.D. badge with them in order to check out these consoles. Any questions, please call the Office of Student Life at 772-1996.Registration for the 2008 SGA Intramural Softball season is now open. The deadline for registering your team is Monday, July 7th, 2008.
All rosters, waivers, and fees must be turned into the Office of Student Life, Room 2.110 in the Jamail Student Center. All forms and fees must be turned in together and must be completed in full.
Fees are $65.00 per team plus two $25 forfeit checks, plus $15 for any non-student player on the roster.
Eligible players are UTMB students, staff and faculty and spouses of students, staff or faculty and any children 18 or older of students, staff or faculty.
There will be a mandatory coaches meeting on Thursday, July 10th in the Senate conference Room (2.112) in the Jamail Student Center.
Play will begin on Monday, July 21st and all games will be played on Monday and Tuesday at the softball fields across from the UTMB Alumni Field House.
Registration forms can be picked up at the Offifce of Student Life and are also available on line at http://www.utmb.edu/studentlife/intramurals/softball/index.html.

St. Vincent's Clinic has returned to our regular clinic schedule, and we need volunteers!
Clinics are Tuesday and Thursday evenings, 4:30-8:00 and Saturday morning, 10:00-2:00.
Psychiatry clinics are the 2nd and 4th Thursday of each month and Ob/Gyn clinics are the 3rd Thursday of each month. All other clinics are general medicine clinics.
We will be closed Thursday July 3, Saturday July 5, and Saturday July 19.

Staff from IS provide approximately 20 hours of laptop computer support to students each week. This service provides troubleshooting, technical support as well as help with wireless access setup.
