Student Life Has Moved
Yes, our office has moved, but not very far. We are now just down the hall in Room 2.134. We still have all the goodies (candy, highlighters, etc.) you have come to look forward to. Plus you can check out the game consoles for the TV rooms on the third floor. Stop by and visit our new space!!

Movie Night at the Plaza
What: My Sister's Keeper
When: Thursday, November 19th at 6:00 pm
Where: On the GIANT outdoor movie screen at the plaza outside the Jamail Student Center
Please bring your folding chair, blanket or mat and join us on the plaza for another fun movie night. We will have drinks, popcorn and snacks, plus door prizes. And it's all FREE for students and their spouses/fiances/significant others.
Get there early becasue we will start drawing for door prizes at 5:45.

Holiday Bingo Night
Back by popluar demand!!! The Student Government Association and the Office of Student Life will host the 2nd Annual Holiday Bingo Night on Wednesday, December 2, 2009 in Levin Hall Dining Room. The bingo games will begin at 6:00 pm and run until 9:00 pm. Doors will open at 5:30. Game cards a free for all UTMB Students and Spouse/Fiances/Significant Others. We will have snacks and drinks throughout the evening.
Again, as last year, many of the prizes are being donated by the UTMB Parents Council throught the cooridinating efforts of Kim McInnis in the UTMB Development Office. If your parents would like to donate prizes, or join the Parents Council, please have them contact Kim McInnis at kcmicinni@utmb.edu.

Student Services Offices Closed for Holiday Events
The Student Services departments (Student Wellness, Student Life and Enrollment Services) will be closed during the following dates and times. Please mark your calendars and plan accordingly.
Thursday, November 19th from 11:00 until 2:00 (Student Wellenss only)
Thursday, December 17th from 11:00 until 2:00 (all three offices...Student Wellness, Enrollment Services and Student Life)
Should you have any questions, please call 772-1215 and then choose which department you would like to speak with.

SGA Special Election for SON Senators
The Student Government Association will be holding a special election to fill a Senator and Alternate Senator position on the Senate. These positions are open to all full or half time School of Nursing students. The SGA Senate meetings are held every first and third Tuesday of the month at noon in the Senate Conference Room in the Jamail Student Center.
Any student interested in running for these positions must come by the Office of Student Life (Room 2.134) in the Student Center and complete a nomination packet prior to the nomination deadline. Here is a list of election schedule dates.
NOMINATIONS: Nov. 18 - Nov. 23 (all nominations must be submitted by noon 11/23/09)
•Candidate must come by Student Life (2nd Floor of the Jamail Student Center) and nominate himself/herself by signing up as a candidate and receiving an election packet.
CAMPAIGN: November 23 - 25
•This time is set-aside for students to advertise their candidacy and inform constituents of their platform. The SGA Elections Committee may schedule a forum for presentations and/or debates.
ELECTION: November 30
•Elections are run on-line and all students will receive directions in an e-mail from Student Life on Wednesday, November 25th. You may access the election site from 8:00 a.m. November 30th through 8:00 p.m. on November 30th.
•All voting will be done online. Any student that needs access to a computer can vote in the Computer Lab on the 3rd floor in the Jamail Student Center.
RUN-OFF: December 4 (If necessary)
•Run-off elections will also be online and all students affected will receive directions in an e-mail from Student Life on Tuesday, December 1st. You may access the election site beginning at 8:00 a.m. December 4th through 8:00 p.m. on
December 4th.

“Aid for Africa” Book Donations
The UTMB AMA Chapter is gathering books to support the Mayo Clinic chapter’s “Aid for Africa” Drive. Please see the announcement below to get an idea of what the program is all about and what types of textbooks they are looking for. If you’d like to make a book donation, please drop-off books near the door on the 3rd floor of the Student Center. If you would like to make a monetary contribution or have any questions/concerns, please contact Mike Leasure at mpleasur@utmb.edu. We will accept donations for the drive until Tuesday, Nov. 24th at 5:30 p.m.

The Mayo AMA-MSS is pleased to announce the kick-off of the 3rd Annual "Aid for Africa" book drive to send medical and scientific textbooks to medical schools in Africa, in order to support our colleagues in Third World countries. The Aid for Africa Project is a collaboration with the Books for Africa charity (http://www.booksforafrica.org). Over the past two years, we have sent over 2 tons of books to Sub-Saharan African medical schools. This year, we're collecting:
* 1995 or newer primary, secondary, and college textbooks (soft and hard cover)
* 1995 or newer reference books such as encyclopedias and dictionaries
* 1995 or newer publish date medical, nursing, IT, and law books - *No journals*
* Monetary contributions to cover shipping costs to Africa

What is the Clinical Scholars program?
The Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program is a leadership and research fellowship for physicians of all disciplines. Clinical Scholars conduct innovative research and work with communities, organizations, practitioners and policy-makers on issues important to the health and well-being of all Americans.
Where does the Clinical Scholars program take place?
The RWJ Clinical Scholars program is offered at four sites: Yale University, University of Michigan, UCLA, and University of Pennsylvania.
What have former graduates done after completing the fellowship?
The Clinical Scholars program began over 35 years ago and has graduated over 1,100 leaders including 40 Institute of Medicine members, 7 medical school deans, 45 department chairs, 100 division chiefs or vice-chairs, many state or city department of health directors, and many leaders in state or federal government including senior positions in Congressional Staff, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the White House.

Call for Volunteers: Fit and Fun Program
Interested in working with kids?
Come volunteer after school at GISD's Morgan Elementary and Weiss Middle School to teach 1rst - 8th graders the importance of good nutrition and being physically active.
Volunteers needed Tuesday's starting DECEMBER 1st from 3:00 pm - 5:30 pm for Morgan Elementary and 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm for Weiss Middle School. Volunteers will be guided to teach basic nutritional tips and engage students in a physical fitness activity.

SIGHT Toy Drive
SIGHT will be having a toy drive in Joes. Please help us provide school supplies and/or toys to needy children in Africa. There will be a box in Joes where you can just drop your items. Also, we will need a few volunteers to sort out the toys into girl or boy toys, so contact Lauren Douglas at lsdougla@utmb.edu if interested in helping a worthy cause.

AOA Medical Student Awards Competition
Every year, Alpha Omega Alpha holds national student contests, which are open to all students (AOA membership is NOT required). Awards are given to the winners along with national recognition. These contests include the areas of poetry, written essay, student research, and community service.
The poetry competition awards prizes for creative poetry on a medical theme. The student essay competition offers prizes for essays on nontechnical medical topics to encourage scholarly writing; winning poems and essays will be published in AOA's publication The Pharos. AOA awards up to 50 $5,000 fellowships each year to medical students at schools with active AOA chapters (such as our own) in order to promote basic and clinical research in medical fields, social science, or health services. The winner of the medical student service project award can win annual grants of up to $2,000 for the first year to support service projects benefiting either the school or its local community.
The AOA Texas Alpha Chapter at UTMB would like to encourage all students who are interested to please enter the contest of your choice. The entry forms for each contest can be found at the national website as well, along with additional details for each contest. Help Fight Breast Cancer, Save Lids to Save Lives
Blackwell Student Society has organized a collection project to help with the fight against breast cancer. Every year Yoplait does a "Save Lids to Save Lives" campaign. Collection boxes have been placed in Joe's Cafe, library first floor, and outside the Clinical Sciences auditorium to gather the pink Yoplait lids. Please donate your Yoplait lids to help bring awareness and funding to breast cancer. All lids collected will be mailed in around mid-November. We need your help to make this a successful effort in the fight against this disease! If you have any questions, email angwalla@utmb.edu.

Syndrome Yearbook Needs Your Pictures
Get your pictures in the yearbook! The Yearbook Staff invites students and parents to submit photos for the yearbook. If you've got great photos of school and community events or you and your friends just having fun, we'd like to see them. Our photographers can't be everywhere. Help us get as many photos as possible to create a terrific book everyone will want to have.
Here is how you can submit photos online:
• Go to: https://images.jostens.com/login
• If it does not automatically log you into the site, enter username:400004399 and password: utmbbook
• Browse to select the photo(s) you wish to upload.
• Enter information about the photo and provide contact information in case the staff needs additional information.
• Click "Save Details".
It's that easy! Submit your photos today! The last day to submit photos is 3/22/2010. But please don't wait until that time, do it now!!

Legal Advice Available for Students
The hours for free legal advice are now on Tuesdays from 11:30 am until 1:30 pm. Students needing to talk to the lawyer should call the Office of Student Life to schedule an appointment in order to see the lawyer.
The lawyer is available to give advice and guidance on legal issues and help with writing wills and other legal documents. This service is free to all UTMB students. To schedule an appointment, please call the Office of Student Life at 772-1215.
