Student Affairs Survey
The Office of the UTMB Executive Vice President and Provost has requested that all UTMB Students assess the effectiveness of the Office for Student Affairs in their respective Schools. Those offices are:

  • School of Medicine – Office for Student Affairs and Admissions
  • School of Nursing – Office for Student Affairs and Admissions
  • School of Health Professions – Office of Academic and Student Affairs
  • Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences – Office Student and Academic Services

Please find in your email inbox a very short survey that will enable you, the student, to evaluate the strengths and identify areas where improvement may be needed, within the Student Affairs offices of your School.
ALL RESPONSES WILL BE ANONYMOUS and will be sent to the provost’s office for review.
Your Student Government Association asks that you take the time to complete and respond to this important survey by Wednesday, March 27, 2013.

Student Government Association Spring Elections
Want to get more involved? Serve UTMB? The Student Government Association (SGA) allows you to do all that and so much more! SGA is the governing body for the students of UTMB who have the task of maximizing student satisfaction on campus. The organization is made up of elected members from each of the four UTMB schools (Health Professions, Biomedical Sciences, Nursing, and Medicine) and five executive committee members. SGA looks at important campus issues and concerns brought to them by students in order to improve campus life.

If you are interested in becoming more involved with student government at UTMB, nominations will take place over the next two weeks from March 11th through March 22nd. Please come by the Office of Student Life, Room 2.134 in the Jamail Student Center, to nominate yourself. All nominations are self nominations and must be made no later than 5pm on Friday, March 22nd. Current executive officers and senators who want to continue their roles will have to re-run for a position.

Spring Election Dates

Self Nominations: March 11th – March 22nd

Campaign Period: March 25th – April 1st

Election: Tuesday, April 2nd - Thursday, April 4th

Run-off (if needed): April 8th

Becoming a member of SGA is a great way to be involved in the future of UTMB, and we would love for you to be a part of it. Should you have any questions at all, please email me or call me at 409-747-9057.

Field House Announcement Tennis Court Announcement
This message is being sent as a reminder for those members who play tennis. Please remember that you must reserve a court and check in at the front desk before starting to play. We have just finished having all seven courts re-surfaced and re-painted and would like for the courts to stay in top notch condition. The courts will remain locked until a member checks in for their reservation. Also, the courts are not to be used for any sport other than tennis. The lighted set of courts will be available starting on Thursday, March 21st at 5:00 am. Thanks in advance for your cooperation.

Garage 4 Student Parking
As a registered handicapped employee/student, please note that the changes mentioned in the message below will not eliminate any handicapped spaces. The handicapped spaces that are currently located in the area that will convert to student parking will be moved to the ground floor of the east side of the garage.

Modifications in Garage 4 parking:
Due to utility construction in the area, which has resulted in the loss of curbside student parking spaces, Parking Facilities will convert the south inside center section of Garage 4 – ground floor (Mechanic Street) into Student Parking. We plan for this change to be in effect by March 22, 2013.
If you enter the garage from the northwest entrance, on The Strand, and do not find an available space to park, you will then be required to exit the garage onto Mechanic Street. You will then need to enter through the southeast entrance in order to be able to obtain a space on the first floor or upper levels. You can also enter the garage through the north-center entrance to access the upper levels.
We do not anticipate this change will cause any other inconvenience, as there is plenty of available space in this facility.

Excellence in Professionalism Award

We are taking nominations for the October award winner, so be sure to submit your nominee!
“On my honor, as a member of the UTMB community, I pledge to act with integrity, compassion, and respect in all my academic and professional endeavors.” The purpose of the Excellence in Professionalism Award is to recognize a student each month that has shown exemplary professionalism within the UTMB community. This student would have exhibited traits of the honor pledge and the three characteristics of the professionalism charter: integrity, compassion, and respect. The Honor Pledge Award Committee will review the nominees and choose three finalists to be voted on by the Student Affairs Deans of each school every month. To eliminate bias, the nomination forms will be presented anonymously to the Honor Pledge Award Committee and the Student Affairs Deans of the schools. The winner will receive a certificate of acknowledgement, a $50 gift certificate, recognition in campus publications and recognition by the Student Affairs Dean of the student’s school. Runners-up will receive a $5 MOD giftcard. All students and faculty members can nominate students.
Students may not nominate themselves.
How to Nominate: Please visit http://www.utmb.edu/studentlife/gettinginvolved/ExcellenceInProfessionalism.htm and click the link “Nominate Here” in the middle of the page which will direct you to the nomination form.
If you have any questions, please contact Ericka Hailey in the Office of Student Life, ext. 79056 or ekhailey@utmb.edu.

Student Help: Reporting Unprofessional Behavior and Mistreatment
UTMB is committed to providing the best educational climate possible. If you experience unprofessional behavior or mistreatment—whether from a resident, faculty member, fellow student or someone else—we want to know about it, so we can rectify the problem for you and for others. This reporting tool is a resource for students seeking to report professionalism concerns to a neutral third party. Confidentiality is respected. All concern notes submitted through the website will show the return address as www.utmb.edu not the sender's email address. There is no identifiable information and no response can be sent back to the sender unless that information is included in the Professionalism Concern Note (PCN). The PCN is forwarded to the Student Ombudsman for follow-up and triage. It is important to note that an anonymous PCN makes it difficult to follow-up and corroborate incidents. An anonymous PCN accompanied with enough information can be useful, if nothing else, it can be noted for the record. This tool is brought to you by the Professionalism Charter Committee, a group of faculty, staff and students working to promote a culture of professionalism at UTMB.
What to do if you see or experience unprofessional behavior
1. Follow the instructions outlined in your course syllabus for reporting such concerns and complaints. If directions for reporting unprofessional behavior are not outlined in your course syllabus, you are encouraged to contact your course coordinator or departmental program advisor.
2. Report the unprofessional behavior incident here.
Examples of unprofessional behavior and mistreatment may include*:
Verbal abuse, such as public belittlement or humiliation of a student or fellow team member

  • Being threatened with physical harm or being physically punished

  • Abuse of power over another person on the health care team. This can include interactions with a faculty physician, nurse or a technician, or mistreatment of a patients.

  • Being required to perform personal services (e.g., shopping, babysitting)

  • Being subjected to offensive remarks/names because of your race, ethnicity or sexual orientation.

  • Receiving lower evaluations or grades solely because of your gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation rather than your performance

  • Being denied opportunities for training or rewards solely because of your gender, race, ethnicity or sexual orientation rather than your performance

  • Sexual harassment (e.g., unwanted sexual advances, offensive sexist remarks/names directed at you personally)

  • Discussing confidential information about a patient in an inappropriate setting

  • Discriminatory treatment of a patient (or another person) due to that person’s economic status, religion, ethnicity or sexual orientation

  • Cheating

Additional student resources are available to help you:
Ombudsman services are available to help you with academic and non-academic concerns, questions and complaints (e.g., fee payment, housing, financial aid, grades, professors, parking and other university-related issues). An ombudsman is a neutral third party, and confidentiality is ensured. The Student Ombudsman Office is located in Suite 2.110, Lee Hage Jamail Student Center, (409) 747-4820.
Visit http://www.utmb.edu/studentservices/ombudsman.html for more details.
Counseling and other wellness assistance is available to students. Visit http://web.utmb.edu/studentwellness/ for more details.
Additional details on student non-academic grievance procedures can be found in the UTMB Handbook of Operating Procedures
Note: Discrimination, sexual harassment and sexual assault are crimes that should be brought to the attention of your school’s Student Affairs Dean and Human Resources - Employee Relations. You are also encouraged to notify Campus Police at ext. 21111. Call 911 in the event of an emergency.
*Many of these examples of unprofessional behavior and mistreatment come from the AAMC medical school graduation questionnaire.

Attend a Student Government Association Meeting!
Student Government Association meetings are open to the student body. Interested in attending a meeting? RSVP to Leanne Hoge at lehoge@utmb.edu.
