2007 SGA Survey Response

Comment Category

Concern

Response/Action Plan

Access

Concerns – too long to get initial counseling appointment; takes awhile to get an appointment; 3 weeks to get a well women exam appointment; canceled appointment same day it was scheduled for

Access Standards

Please note that all health and counseling emergencies will be treated as such and be evaluated immediately.

Appointments will be available to schedule according to these standards:

Illness – no later than next business day – same day if you call by

8:30 AM

Immunizations – within 5 business days

Well Woman Exam – within 5 weeks

Counseling – within 5 business days

Psychiatrist evaluation – within 6 weeks

Psychiatrist medication follow-up – within 4 weeks

Should a student request an appointment at an interval longer than the standard (i.e. call 3 weeks in advance to schedule their immunization appointment because it is convenient for them) such requests will not be considered outside the standard.

Should a student have a concern that they feel needs immediate attention they will be referred to the professional staff for immediate/same day consultation.

On rare occasions a healthcare provider or counselor may call in sick it may be necessary to reschedule appointments.  Every effort is made to contact students with as much notice as possible when this occurs.

Health Holds

Concerns – placing holds before immunization is actually due

All student immunization records were reviewed in mid September 2006.  Students lacking required immunizations or having immunizations due in October or November received a health hold on their record.  Students with holds for immunizations not due had the hold temporarily removed to obtain transcripts, apply for an away rotation, etc. Please note that SW reviews all records once a year.

Plan for Academic Year 2007 – 2008

GSBS, SAHS & SON records will be reviewed in September and have holds placed by mid October for any immunizations due during the fall semester.  SOM records will be reviewed in late January and holds will be placed for any immunizations due through March 31.   The intent is to have all students up to date on their immunizations prior to enrolling for the next term.

Cost of Lab Tests

Concerns – need to be informed of cost of lab tests before they are done; ability to pay for lab tests

Students are required to have insurance.  All students are notified at the time they have labs drawn that they are responsible for the any costs that the insurance company does not cover.  A notice to this effect will be posted in all exam rooms and staff will continue to inform students of this at the time lab is drawn.

Should offer HPV Vaccine

Request that HPV vaccine be available at SW

The HPV vaccine became available at student wellness in April 2007. A notice was posted on student wellness web page and email notification sent to all students.

Should be able to use credit/debit cards

Requesting to use credit/debits cards in SW

Credit/debits cards have been accepted in student wellness since August 2006. This information has been added to the list of fees on the student wellness web page.

Other Concerns

nurse does follow-up with lab results rather than nurse practitioner

would like to see a MD

wait on phone to get question answered

It is the practice in SW for the registered nurse to notify students of lab results. Staff will provide students with this information when they are seen so that the appropriate expectation is set.  The nurse practitioner when indicated or requested by the student does talk directly with the student regarding lab results.

Students are free to request an appointment with the nurse practitioner to discuss lab results.

SW has a family medicine physician who provides consultation to the nurse practitioners.  When indicated the family medicine physician does see students when she is at SW to do chart reviews.

SW staff make every effort to talk with students when they call in but at  times more than one line rings and students are also present checking in for appointments.  Students will be offered the option of being called back if there will be a wait on the phone to answer their question.
