UTMB uses 3-D brain simulator to teach neurosurgery students
We are proud to be integrating the computerized and virtual reality environments into resident training. With the inclusion of the ImmersiveTouch unit to our laboratory (used in many AANS Top Gun competitions), our residents will be able to train procedures ranging from ventriculostomy placement, vertebroplasty, pedicle screw placement, aneurysm clip placement and basic procedural and ability modules to perfect their eye-hand coordination skills.
We have now integrated all modalities of simulation (cadaver, physical and VR computerized) into one single internal resident curriculum for residents to expand their skills in a safe, constructive environment Research opportunities exist for residents medical students and fellows to conduct research projects based in objective performance tracking and procedure development.
This section focuses on minimally invasive spine training and skull base and neuroendoscopy training using physical simulators such as the SIMONT neurotrainer for ventricular and skull base navigation. These physical models have the advantage of using real instruments which provide a realistic experience that can be useful for later applying in the operating room.
The bioskills section of the laboratory has a microvascular anastomosis station, a Mayfield station for basic concepts teaching and a drilling section for basic drilling skills. Residents learn the basic flap designs, craniotomy bone flaps and pinning techniques prior to being exposed to the skull base laboratory. We are currently working on installation of an ICP monitor, lumbar puncture/drain and ventricular catheter placement station for practice of these key procedures.
