The Program Director is Linda G. Phillips, M.D. She was certified by the American Board of surgery in 1984 and the American Board of Plastic Surgery in 1986. She has been a member of the faculty at the University of Texas Medical Branch (Galveston) since 1988. At the time of the departure of Dr. Martin Robson, she was appointed Acting Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery, as well as Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency. After a national search, she was appointed to the permanent position both as Program Director and as the Chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery. She was promoted to Professor and awarded the Truman G. Blocker, Jr., M.D., Distinguished Chair in Plastic Surgery at the same time. She is particularly active in the committee organization of the American College of Surgeons, the Plastic Surgery Education Foundation (currently serving as a director), the American Association of Plastic Surgeons, and the Association of Academic Chairman of Plastic Surgery. She is a former Chair of the Plastic Surgery Research Council and the Residency Review Committee, and is currently a Director of the ABPS. Her research is funded by the NIH, PSEF, and industry.
Dr. Phillips, like the other full time faculty is geographically full time and has no outside private practice activities. Dr. Phillips discharges all of the duties and responsibilities of Program Director during all the rotations of the Plastic Surgery residents. These duties are not delegated to any other faculty. When the residents rotate at M.D. Anderson, they report directly to Dr. Geoffrey Robb. When the residents are on rotation in Miami with Dr. Thomas Baker, they report directly to him.
The PSOL data is submitted monthly by each resident to Dr. Phillips' office. Dr. Phillips reviews the data and discusses this with each resident monthly. She use this to advise the resident on the types of cases he or she should seek to participate in.
The Program Director, like the rest of the geographic full-time faculty is on salary. No private practice is allowed. Salaries are paid by State, university, hospital, and practice component.
