Faculty are present in-house at all times for surgical cases. On call faculty are immediately available by beeper or phone 24-hours daily. All faculty are present at all times during outpatient office periods assigned to them.
During scheduled operating room time, a faculty member is in the operating room suite. All cases seen for emergency care are discussed with the faculty member.
B. Working Hours
The residents' alternate first call every third night so as to assure time off and a full 24-hour period off each week. They are backed up by a senior resident who can also assure adequate rest for the junior residents. Finally, a faculty member is always on call to back up the residents. We strictly adhere to the 80-hour work rule.
A. Resident Evaluation
All of the residents are evaluated by all of the faculty at the end of each rotation.
B. Faculty Evaluation
Residents are asked to complete faculty evaluations after each rotation. These are submitted anonymously in a web-based system and collated by the housestaff office to preserve anonymity. Dr. Phillips uses these to evaluate the faculty on a yearly basis and counsels them, as needed. This has resulted in greater conference attendance and call and coverage changes at Shriners Burns Institute.
C. Internal Evaluation of the Program
The entire division (faculty, residents and research staff) yearly meets for an evaluation of the program in terms of clinical, research, and educational productivity. This has resulted in addition/deletion of conferences topics, changed call arrangements, and greater interchange with laboratory staff on a regular basis.
In addition, the goals and objectives of the Residency Program are to provide a wide range of educational opportunities to those trainees pursuing Board qualification in the field of Plastic Surgery and to provide teaching in the field of Plastic surgery to medical students, graduate students in other specialties, and post graduate practicing physicians.
