NIH-funded Research in Gastrointestinal Diseases
Department of Surgery at The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston

Through our NIH funded training grant (T32), entitled “Surgical Research Training in Gastrointestinal Endocrinology,” we are soliciting applications from individuals who are currently in or completing accredited surgical residencies and who are eligible to spend two years dedicated to research.

Our training program is specifically focused on the research training of young academic surgeons interested in problems of the alimentary tract. The program represents an intensive and integrated two year research experience that offers the individual trainee a highly-structured research experience in fundamental aspects of molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, endocrinology, pharmacology, immunology and cell biology as they pertain to diseases of the digestive tract, using state-of-the-art techniques and facilities. During this time, trainees will take specific didactic basic research courses and have the opportunity to enroll and fulfill requirements for a Master of Medical Science degree.

Our program offers a unique opportunity for scientific cross-fertilization as well as important interdepartmental contacts, which provide a diversified research experience for our trainees. All of the Core and Associate Preceptors have active laboratories, have been successful in securing extramural funding and have a major commitment to the training of academic surgeons.
