Dedicated in 1971, the seven-story basic science building, located just east
of and linked to the Medical Research Building, was named for prominent
Galvestonian Libbie Moody Thompson. She was the wife of former U.S. congressman
Clark W. Thompson and the daughter of Moody Foundation founders William L. Moody
Jr. and Mrs. Libbie Rice Shearn Moody. Mrs. Thompson was one of Washington,
D.C.’s most prominent residents and social leaders for a number of years, and
her home on Massachusetts Avenue was fondly referred to as “the Texas
Embassy.” The auditorium in the 130,000-square-foot building was named in
memory of the Thompsons’ daughter, Libbie, who died in 1964.
