Opened
in 1983, the Texas Department of Criminal Justice Hospital is the state’s
major provider of inmate health care and is the only hospital in the nation
affiliated with a university and dedicated exclusively to prisoners. The
facility includes intensive care and telemetry beds, general medical and
surgical units, and an outpatient clinic where UTMB specialists see more than
24,500 patients annually. The hospital also contains several rooms equipped for
telemedicine consultations.
