Acquired by UTMB in 1996, Rebecca Sealy Hospital is named in memory of the wife of John Sealy I. It houses UTMB’s day surgery services, the Regional Psychiatric Hospital for Mental Health–Mental
Retardation patients, and inpatient and partial hospitalization programs for the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. It also houses Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation’s administrative offices and clinics.

Rebecca Sealy, with her brother-in-law George Sealy, was instrumental in determining that John Sealy’s bequest of $50,000 for “a charitable purpose” be used to build the first John Sealy Hospital. She was also a major force in the subsequent founding in 1890—the year the hospital opened—of the first nursing school in Texas, Galveston’s John Sealy Hospital Training School for Nurses.
