Operated by the Shriners
of North America, the Shriners Burns Hospital provides free treatment to
pediatric burn patients from around the globe and is one of only a few such
centers in the world today. Dedicated in 1992, the $40 million facility replaced
an earlier hospital, which opened on the UTMB campus in 1966
as the first Shriners Burns Institute in the United States.
