Transforming Health Care
As an academic health sciences center, UTMB exists to define the future of health care—by
educating tomorrow’s caregivers and scientists, advancing biomedical knowledge, and
improving patient care delivery. The intense debate in recent years over how to reform the
U.S. health care system has centered on three priorities: more equitable access, lower costs
and higher quality. Through innovative education programs and new models of care delivery,
UTMB is helping transform health care to make these priorities a reality for the region, state and nation.
Community Health Initiatives
UTMB has a long tradition of improving health in the communities it serves—locally, statewide,
nationally and internationally. Whether providing hands-on care or developing new models for
delivering quality service, university faculty, staff and students are defining the future of health care.

Understanding Charity Care in Today’s Health Care Environment
Constrained resources in recent years have limited the amount of charity care UTMB and other
mission-based health care organizations are able to provide. But the university remains committed
to helping Texas and the nation determine the best way to ensure equitable access to quality care for all.
