Amjad Hossain, Ph.D., HCLD, a renowned reproductive biologist (clinical embryologist), is the director of the assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratories in the division of Reproductive Endocrinology. Dr. Hossain received a master’s degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and Ph.D.degree from Kent state University in Ohio. Practical training in assisted reproductive technologies was received at the Medical College of Georgia, Emory Center for human reproduction, Emory University, Atlanta; Atlanta Reproductive Biology Associates (popularly known as RBA); Harley Medical Center, Michigan; Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri, and Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) at New Jersey. Dr. Hossain is certified to perform high complexity ART procedures by the American Board of Bioanalyst (ABB), and is a certified CAP inspector of ART laboratories. Dr. Hossain holds active membership in the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), American Society of Andrologist (ASA) and American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). The ART laboratory at UTMB Fertility Center, under Dr. Hossain’s supervision are CLIA certified, and accredited by the American College of Pathologists (CAP). Under his direction, the UTMB ART laboratory maintains its competitive edge and provide the state of the art care to the infertility patients in the greater Houston area.
Prior to joining UTMB, Dr. Hossain held many prestigious positions, including andrologist as Talmadge hospital, Medical College of Georgia, Associate Professor and Director of ART laboratory services at the University of South Alabama (USA), Associate Professor and director of IVF laboratory at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC), and director of ART laboratory services, Midwest Fertility Center (MFC), Chicago. During his academic tenure at the previous institutions, Dr. Hossain has published numerous scholarly articles on human reproduction, and is a recipient of several prestigious awards. He is recognized locally and internationally for his contributions in the field.
Currently, Dr. Hossain is involved with male infertility research at UTMB. In his laboratory, opportunities are available for students, residents and fellows who are interested in short research projects in assisted reproductive technologies (ART). His research at UTMB focuses In Vitro maturation (IVM) of human gametes (sperm and oocytes); role of male gamete (sperm) in fertilization and embryo quality; sperm DNA fragmentation and sperm DNA chromatin evaluation; assays for determining the fertility potential of sperm; management of testicular biopsies; preservation of fertility by cryopreservation technology (slow freezing & vitrification) of sperm, oocyte, embryo, and also testicular and ovarian tissues. He has over 20 years of experience and significant expertise in Andrology and Embryology Laboratory techniques. Assisted Reproductive Technologies (IVF) is a fast changing field and so he continues to work hard to avail himself of, and implement the latest techniques that would help improve “our patients’ rate of “live birth” because, he believes that the “biggest room in the world is room for improvement”. (What I like most about my job is that I am not dealing with life and death issues rather, I am working with a wonderful team that “brings things to life”).
He is actively involved in research and has co-authored several publications. He is an active member of many scientific organizations including the ASRM, CRB, RBPG, AAB, and RLTPG.
He is certified by The American Board of Bioanalyst (ABB) as a Technical Supervisor (TS) in Andrology and Embryology, and as an Embryology Laboratory Director (ELD).
