Meet Our Faculty


Manubai Nagamani, M.D. is Director of the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility and the REI Fellowship Training Program at the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston.  She is a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Endocrinology. After her residency in OB/GYN, Dr. Nagamani   completed her fellowship training in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at the Medical College of Georgia in Augusta.  She is Board Certified as a specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and infertility by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG). She is also certified by ABOG in Obstetrics and Gynecology. Dr. Nagamani has been a specialist in Reproductive Endocrinology and infertility for more than 25 years.

 

Dr. Nagamani is a Founding and Charter Member of Society of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility.  She is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, Society for Gynecologic Investigation, Endocrine Society and, among others.  Dr. Nagamani has been awarded numerous grants by the National Institute of Health and other sources for her studies on polycystic ovary Syndrome (PCOS), infertility, osteoporosis and menopause.

 

Dr. Nagamani's clinical practice is centered on advanced treatment of infertility including tubal reanastamosis, in vitro fertilization (IVF) and embryo transfer, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, donor egg program and frozen embryo transfer. She established the in vitro fertilization program in UTMB Galveston in 1982 and the first baby conceived in the IVF program at UTMB delivered in 1983. She also provides care for women with other Reproductive Endocrine problems ranging from congenital anomalies of the reproductive tract to the menopause. Because of her long term experience and research in the area of PCOS, Dr.Nagamani is internationally recognized as an expert in treatment of women with PCOS.

 

Special Interests: Infertility; Assisted Reproductive Technologies, in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer; Ovulation Induction and intrauterine insemination, tubal reanastamosis, Polycystic ovary syndrome, delayed puberty.

John Phelps, M.D. is an associate professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology in the Division of Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. Doctor Phelps is double board certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology, and in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility. After completing a fellowship in Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, Doctor Phelps completed a second fellowship in Advanced Gynecological Laparoscopic and Pelvic Surgery. Doctor Phelps has been practicing as an infertility specialist for over 10 years. Doctor Phelps is especially interested in helping infertile couples conceive a child. He performs in vitro fertilization (IVF), ovulation induction and advanced laparoscopic surgical procedures to help infertile couples conceive. Laparoscopic procedures regularly performed by Doctor Phelps include excision of endometriosis, tubloplasty, resection of ovarian cysts, removal of fibroids, vaginal vault suspensions and total laparoscopic hysterectomies. Doctor Phelps has numerous publications pertaining to infertility, IVF and laparoscopic surgery. Doctor Phelps has written book chapters on both infertility and laparoscopic surgery.

 

Special Interests: Advanced laporoscopic surgery for infertility, endometriosis, laparoscopic tuboplasty, laparoscopic resection ovarian cysts and uterine myomas and laparoscopic hysterectomy, infertility.

Amjad Hossain, Ph.D., HCLD, a renowned reproductive biologist (clinical embryologist), is the director of the assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratories in the division of Reproductive Endocrinology. Dr. Hossain received a master’s degree from the University of Waterloo, Canada, and Ph.D.degree from Kent state University in Ohio. Practical training in assisted reproductive technologies was received at the Medical College of Georgia, Emory Center for human reproduction, Emory University, Atlanta; Atlanta Reproductive Biology Associates (popularly known as RBA); Harley Medical Center, Michigan; Jewish Hospital at Washington University in St.Louis, Missouri and Reproductive Medicine Associates (RMA) at New Jersey. Dr. Hossain is certified to perform high complexity ART procedures by the American Board of Bioanalyst (ABB), and is a certified CAP inspector of ART laboratories. Dr. Hossain holds active membership in the American Society of Reproductive Medicine (ASRM), American Society of Andrologist (ASA) and American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB).

 

Our ART laboratory at the University Fertility Center at the Bay Colony Town Center, Dickinson is CLIA certified, and accredited by the American College of Pathologists (CAP). Under Dr. Hossain’s supervision, the UTMB ART laboratory maintains its competitive edge and provide the state of the art care to the infertility patients in the Galveston/greater Houston area. Under his direction, our in vitro fertilization program has been highly successful with excellent pregnancy rates,

 

Currently, his research at UTMB focuses In Vitro maturation (IVM) of human gametes (sperm and oocytes); role of male gamete (sperm) in fertilization and embryo quality; sperm DNA fragmentation and sperm DNA chromatin evaluation; assays for determining the fertility potential of sperm; management of testicular biopsies; preservation of fertility by cryopreservation technology (slow freezing & vitrification) of sperm, oocyte,
