What is myWebCT?
myWebCT is an area to organize your access to your course web
pages. It provides a menu and a global (single-password) login to
all your courses. myWebCT also provides some content highlights for
each course you load into your myWebCT area. Not only is myWebCT
helpful, it is required -- you can only access courses that you add to
your myWebCT menu.

What's my WebCT e-mail address?
You don't actually have a WebCT e-mail address. The mail tool in your
course is only for use within the course. It's actually more a
"message" tool than an "email" tool.
To use it, just go back to your course pages, find a link to the mail
tool, open it, select "compose new message," use the browse
button to find your instructor's name, select it, press "done",
and then compose your message. An attachment can be sent using the
buttons near the bottom of that screen.

How do I set up a new course?
Go to Request to the form "Create A New Course" and complete the form. You will be notified when the course has been created. UTMB has a site license for WebCT, so it is available immediately at no cost to you. See the Designer Guide for more assistance.
The best way to incorporate material into a web is to put it into HTML. You can easily create and edit HTML documents in FrontPage and in Word. When your documents are ready, you will copy them to your course.

- Click 'Shared Access' (only the Main Designer has this
button)
- Write the Global ID of the shared-access designer
- Click 'Add'
Repeat the process for however many additional
designers you want to assign.

How should I edit files for a WebCT course?
You can use FrontPage or Word to create and edit HTML files.
To use FrontPage, click Start, Programs, then Microsoft Frontpage to
start the program. You do not need to open a web to edit
files. You have 3 ways of viewing a file in FP: Normal, HTML, and
Preview (tabs at the lower left of the display).
In Word, open the file as usual. There are two ways to view
an HTML file in Word. The usual Word screen is the default; to view
the HTML code, click "View", then "HTML
Source". To return to the default view, click "View"
and "Object."

How do I design page headers in WebCT?
A good way to get started is to select the "Designer
Options" radio button at the top of the Homepage. It allows
you to change the look of your home page. You can use the built-in
graphics, banners, files and a ton of graphics, or you can create and use
your own. You can change the colors of the page. Change your
"header" and "footer", add a counter, etc. This
process will introduce you to the "feel" of navigation and
activity in WebCT. Click on the Help link (top right) at any time.

How do I register students, staff and faculty in a WebCT course?

to begin. Then we can register your students automatically for you. The

Where can I find on-line help for designers?
You can reach on-line help in several ways. Click
"Help" on the upper right of the screen for the on-line
manual. If you are logged on as a designer, you will see help
topics for designers.

Are there any rules for naming WebCT files?
Filenames in WebCT must not contain any spaces.
Although the system will allow you to create such a name, afterward you
will have peculiar problems, such as being able to find it in the
directory listing, but not being able to link an icon to it.
Substituting underscores for spaces will avoid such problems.

How can I re-arrange the icons on the WebCt home page?

button -->> small radio buttons will appear to the left of your
icons -->> Click the button beside the icon you want to move
-->> go to the bottom of the page and click the Forward or Backward

How can I create multiple layers of icons in WebCT?
From the control panel on the left Select -->> Add -->>
Tool Page. That will create an icon on your home page which takes
you to a new screen where you can add icons to your heart's
content. (Some of those icons on that second-level page can, of
course, take you to a third-level page if you like). If you want a
page of Links, create a new page, put all your links on it, then in
WebCT: Select -->> Add -->> Single Page -->> your new
page with the links on it.

Can I release information selectively, i.e., to some students, but not all, or at certain times and not others?
You can release any/all information selectively; that is to say, you can hide the welcome icon from everyone except a list of faculty. Students will not even see it. Select the "Designer Options" radio button -->> click the little round radio button to the left of the Welcome and Overview icon -->> Click "Edit". You will see that you can release it by names, or by categories. You can release the item to any combination of individual students. Or, if you have a field in your database called "Type", and you have put "FAC" in this field to identify faculty, you can use the "Release based on" Type Equals "FAC". Now this icon will only be visible to those in your database identified as FAC. You'll also note that we can release any icon based on time and date as well, and close it off by time and date.

How can I display a particular file when a particular icon is clicked?
Select the "Designer Options" radio button -->> Add -->> Single Page -->> Type in the title of your presentation, "Browse" for the icon, scroll down and click on "pictures.gif" (or any other icon that strikes your fancy), "Browse" for the file name and click on the PPT file you want to associate with the icon. Then click the "Add" button on that screen.

Are there any characters I should not put into WebCT files?
HTML will ignore tabs and squish everything together (left-justified). You will get much better results by using tables without borders and putting your columns in cells. HTML will retain the format for you. Open the Word file. Insert a table, turn off the borders, and put materials in the cells. Tab from cell to cell. Word does not put those pesky formatted tabs into the file. It recognizes you're just traveling from cell to cell.

How can I organize a group of items, or links, under one icon?
Use your FrontPage interface, or other editor. Using Small
Groups as an example:
1) make a table with 3 cells per row for, for
instance, Student Name, Small Group Assignment, Classroom
Assignment. You can make links in your table so that if a student
clicks on his/her Small Group Assignment, it will show a screen with the
names of the cohorts in that group, or it could bring up a schedule of
activities for that group for the current semester;
2) the Classroom Assignment link can show a map
locating the classroom, etc., etc. Colors can be used also.
You can make each group designation a different color so the student
could visually pick out his/her cohorts. Lots of possibilities.

How can I view student and designer screens at one
If you have both Internet Explorer and Netscape (or
any two different browsers) installed on your computer:
- First, you will need to add a student to your course by
clicking:
Course Management -> Student Management -> Students -> Add.
- Enter a new test student identity. Once you have done this,
open a different browser (e.g. if you're already logged in
as Designer on Netscape, open an Internet Explorer browser
window, or vice versa) and login as the student.
If you only have one browser installed on your
computer, or prefer to use only one browser:
- Another way to see a Student View is to add an icon to your
course that links to a student view, but is actually hidden
from the students.
- To add the student view link to the course homepage, click:
Organize Icons --> Add --> URL
- Enter a title such as Student View, choose an icon, and
enter the URL of your server. The URL for this icon must be
the opposite format from the address that you usually use
to login on: e.g. if I normally login to:
http://www.webct.com:8900
for the Student View link I would
enter the IP address*:
http://405.331.205.14:8900
- If the reverse case is true, that I use the IP address
normally, I would have to use the alias of the web page
(http://www.webct.com:8900) for the Student View link. Once
the field has been filled in, select "New browser
window", and click Add. Now, clicking this icon causes
a new browser window to be opened and when the user clicks
on my WebCT or a course in the course listing, they will be
prompted for their login information. Simply enter the
login of a test student added to the course, and you enter
the student view.
Note: This new Icon should be set to
"hidden" so that only the course designer will be able to see
it.
*In order to find out what your IP address is, you can
"ping" the server.

How do I export graphics from Word to HTML?
When you export Word files to HTML, if it has graphics in it, it creates 2 objects: an HTML file and a file folder with the images in it. They both have to be imported into WebCT (HTML file should be placed one folder-level above the image folder).
