Important note:  Before students or faculty can use the tools provided in WebCT, such as MAIL or DISCUSSION, the tools must be added to the course.   See Adding a Tool to a Course for specific instructions.

Tutorials

The University of Florida has produced an excellent tutorial on course design at http://training.ifas.ufl.edu/deft/index.htm.  It contains modules on developing faculty support, course design, development, production and delivery.  The tutorial is presented in video (Real Player) and text (printable .PDF files), as well as an optional text version.

The University of Arkansas at Little Rock's site http://www.ualr.edu/~factech/ is another helpful site for WebCT users for student, teacher and designer.

Ask Dr. C questions about online teaching and learning with WebCT at http://www.webct.com/ask_drcAdministrator, Designer/TA/Faculty and Student questions are addressed.

You can reach on-line help in several ways.   Click "Help" on the upper right of the screen for the on-line manual.  If you are logged on as a designer, you will see help topics for designers.

Additional help is available from WebCT specifically for designers:  http://www.webct.com/ask_drc/viewpage?name=ask_drc_faq_designer.   You will find answers for designers and students both.

A WEBCT 3.8  GETTING STARTED TUTORIAL for Designers  is offered by WebCT.  You will also find Dr. C  FAQ for Designers and a searchable Dr. C. database of questions and answers.

Access Control

You can release any/all information selectively; that is to say, you can hide the welcome icon from everyone except a list of faculty.  Students will not even see it.  Select the "Designer Options" radio button -->> click the little round radio button to the left of the Welcome and Overview icon -->> Click "Edit".  You will see that you can release it by names, or by categories.  You can release the item to any combination of individual students.  Or, if you have a field in your database called "Type", and you have put "FAC" in this field to identify faculty, you can use the "Release based on"  Type Equals "FAC".  Now this icon will only be visible to those in your database identified as FAC.   You'll also note that we can release any icon based on time and date as well, and close it off by time and date.

You can also release any icon/link based on time and date. Add a page, tool or icon as usual. Then choose SELECT when presented afterward with these options:

Return to Homepage.
Select release criteria for Single Page (e.g. date, name, quiz grade).
Add another page or tool.

You will see the "Update link to ..." page.  At the bottom of the screen, use the SELECT option to choose which users will be able to see this page, tool or icon.  If you leave this option blank, everyone will be able to see this link.

Then select the day and time the link will become visible (available) and when it will become invisible (unavailable).  Don't forget to click on UPDATE.

Setting up Shared Designer Access

These steps explain the process of setting up multiple designer accounts within WebCT.  Note: the shared-access designers you want to add have to exist in the Global Database.

On the homepage of the course:

  1. click 'Course Management'
  2. Click 'Course Functions'
  3. Click 'Shared Access' (only the Main Designer has this button)
  4. Write the Global ID of the shared-access designer
  5. Click 'Add'

Repeat the process for however many additional designers you want to assign.

Discussion

Discussions is a place where messages can be posted for public display. On the Internet, and in some of the online modules, a Discussion may also be called a bulletin board or a forum.  In WebCT, Discussions is the main tool and topics are the items to be discussed.

Before students can use the discussion tool, it must be added to the course.

A Discussion can be used :

The designer has the ability to direct discussion with the ability to:

Email

The mail icon in WebCT allows users to send e-mail to other WebCT users.  WebCT also allows for mail to be forwarded to any Internet mail address if the administrator allows it.

Before you and your students can use Mail, you must add it to your course. For instructions, see Adding a Page or Tool.

Student have access to all the features of Mail with three exceptions

Return

Assignments

You and your students can use Assignments only after you have added the tool to your course.

Depending on how you structure your course, you may want to have Assignments linked on the Homepage or you may want to group them with quizzes and self tests on an Assessment organizer page. For more information on adding Assignments, see Add Page or Tool.

Assignments allows you to create and distribute course assignments to your students, and download, evaluate, and assign a grade to the completed work. First, add the assignment to the course, then enter the instructions about the assignment, assign a maximum grade to inform the students of the assignment's value, and set the time and dates for which you want the assignment to be available. You can also attach assignment-related files such as photographs, a spreadsheet you want the student to modify, or articles to which you want students to respond. Students can then view the assignment instructions, submit their completed work, and view their grade after you have graded their assignment.

Return

Track Students

Track Students allows you to monitor how students are progressing through the course material. You can see the pages in the content modules that students have visited. You can also view the number of times they have accessed other areas of the course, for example, Homepage and Organizer pages. Finally, you can view their activity in Discussions. You can view tracking information on individual students or the entire class.

Questions Database

The Questions Database is the repository for all of the questions you use in your course's quizzes and surveys. Once you have created a quiz or survey, you select questions from the Questions Database to add to your quiz or survey.

Return

Chat

Chat allows you, and your students and teaching assistants to have real-time conversations. There are four general purpose chat rooms and one general forum for the course. There is also a general chat room for all courses, which is a room shared by everybody from all courses on the same server. Conversations in the four general purpose rooms are recorded. You are the only person in the course who can see the records.

As designer, you can:

Quizzes

Use Quiz and Survey to create and administer your quizzes and surveys. Quizzes can be completely or partially graded by WebCT depending upon the type of questions in the quiz; WebCT is unable to automatically grade paragraph questions. Survey responses are automatically tabulated, and the results are summarized.

You can:

Adding a Tool to a Course

Before students or faculty can use the discussion tool, mail, chat, quizzes, and others, those specific tools must be added to the course.  Here are instructions for adding the discussion tool:

  1. select "Add Page or Tool";

  2. select "Discussions" under the heading "Communication Tools";

  3. enter a title, such as "Discussions";

  4. decide where to place the Discussion tool, on the Homepage, the Navigator bar, or elsewhere;

  5. decide what, if any, icon to represent the Discussion tool, and what, if any, text;

  6. select what icon to represent the arrival of new messages;

  7. select "Add".Tools.gif (48488 bytes)

These steps must be performed for each WebCT tool before students will be able to use them.  Here is a sample Homepage with several tools added.

Return

Share Designer Access

You can give other designers access to your course. These designers must have a WebCT ID. They will have full designer access, except that they will not be able to grant shared access to additional designers. These designers cannot already be students or teaching assistants in the course. If you want to give a teaching assistant in your course shared access, you first have to delete that TA from the course via Manage Teaching Assistants.

Return

Backup Course

You can back up your course at any stage of development. After you create a backup, we recommend that you download it to your computer for safekeeping. If you don't like the changes you've made to the course or if you need to move the course to a different WebCT server, you can upload and restore the backup.
