You Count Action Plans: Message from leadership to managers

Dr. David Callender

On February 7, 2008, I sent a message to the UTMB community about the importance of the You Count survey, respectfully asking everyone to use the survey as a mechanism to share ideas, perspectives and perceptions. I and others in leadership want and need to hear about the issues and opportunities that are important to you and other members of the UTMB workforce.

Now that the survey results are in (and accessible to all UTMB employees via the You Count site at www.utmb.edu/youcount ), we need to put the information to work to make UTMB a preferred workplace and care provider.

The Executive Leadership Council and I are asking all work areas to develop action plans based on the You Count survey by August 31, 2008. There are two specific areas we would like these plans to target (1) enhancing employee engagement and (2) improving employee awareness about, options of, and access to UTMB patient care.

Why these two targets? Employees are a strategic priority and critical to our future. An engaged, informed and empowered workforce drives success, advocates and promotes the university and its missions, believes in UTMB, takes a personal stake in making things right, in being the best, in moving the organization forward. We need a workforce of ambassadors, spreading the good news about this incredible institution.

To assist with the creation of your action plan, Human Resources has developed a simple one-page template and made it available on the You Count site. Your HR consultants will be contacting you with details, and can answer questions and assist you in developing and monitoring your individual plans.

I want to thank and congratulate everyone for the impressive survey response rate of more than 70 percent; I know your support helped make it happen. Now, armed with good data, we have a responsibility to take action. It's important for the institution and for our employees. Let's get to work on some constructive change.

Sincerely,
David L. Callender, MD. MBA, FACS
President
